The Power of “Huh’s!” and My Dad’s Career Guidance from The Other Side

My loving, outgoing father passed of Lymphatic Cancer when I was 21. While cancer itself is a big jerk, the gift of passing this way is time. For deep connection and conversations.

We made a deal that after he crossed to the other side, he would do everything he could to communicate with me here. And I would do everything I could to communicate with him “there”.

Well, his communication began right away! I missed the moment of his last breath, but shortly after I got to his hospital room with the rest of my family – the radio came on in the TV and started playing “Angel” by Sarah McLaughlin. I looked at the nurse and asked her where the remote was for the TV? She told me there wasn’t one. I asked her if my dad could have turned it on? She told me, yes it happens all the time! People who pass often start playing with the hospital electronics.

This was one of my first “huh!’s”.

At home, my lights would randomly flicker or go off/on. My old-school alarm clock would go off randomly and not for a set time or with the on button switched. The alarm radio would also start playing on its own.

I still vividly recall driving my VW Jetta to a park to walk, sobbing in my intense grief, and the tape deck came on! I didn’t even know this car had a tape deck! But there was the white noise schrrrrrrr sound loud as day!

I played with the on/off switch, tried to change functions and manipulate the volume but it was like the tape deck was frozen in an on position. And that’s when I laughed out loud through my tears. Dad had kept our deal and was truly doing what he could to communicate.

These experiences elicited joy, knowing my dad was still there with me even though his body had left my physical reality.

The grief continued to ebb and flow though and after a few years of pain, a friend recommended that I see a Reiki Master/Medium she had just met.

I had no idea what Reiki was, but I stayed open and curious and attended a session in her home clinic. She opened all my energy channels, and my dad came through to her immediately sharing loving messages for me. I sobbed harder than I have ever sobbed. And at one point, she asked me to look at him. He was right there. And I realized he was! In my mind’s eye, he was looking down at me through what looked like a portal window on a ship. He looked to be about 30 years old, with a head of hair, and vibrant loving blue eyes. (I always did love his eyes). He was radiating love for me.

Through Barb, he told me how proud he was of the current work I was doing at a Piano studio and also to not be scared of becoming an entrepreneur. He shared that he always wanted to be an inventor (dad could tinker and fix anything) but he had a family to support and needed to choose security. (He also shared that this shutting off his passion was a factor that contributed to his illness).

He said we shared an entrepreneurial, free spirit and he really wanted me to follow my heart and take the riskier but more fulfilling path.

I was sent on my way with a list of spiritual books I would soak up like sponges, and a tape recording that turned out to be all static (Barb said sometimes energy frequencies gets too high during sessions and tape recorders don’t work).

I also left a little confused because just passing the Entrepreneur wing at my university made me shudder. I couldn’t understand why someone would want to work all the time and not be able to leave it at a workplace!? (shudder shudder)

Well, a few job positions and a fiancé later and I was writing a business plan during engineering boardroom meetings.

With my husband’s support, I built a corporate wellness company for 5 years until the oil and gas market crashed and shut it down. My husband and I used this time opportunity to take our young kids to SE Asia for a wild and magical year.

On our return, I got my Health Coaching certification because I’d been a health nut for as long as I could remember, and when I heard about this career my heart said “huh!” Little did I know that Life Coaching would capture me even more! Then boom! A spiritual health coaching client nudged me towards hidden gifts and I started to play with the universe just to see what skills I was able to access.

Being an entrepreneur can essentially mean using all of your skills, interests, experiences and gifts to freely serve fellow human beings. 

Life is full of huh’s that deserve to be followed. One of my greatest life lessons so far is that often our greatest joy lives on the other side of that which scares us. Look at that fear with an open mind and curiosity.
